The project charter is probably the most important document of any project. It establishes a common understanding between the project sponsors and project team regarding the project objectives and scope. The project charter provides the foundation for the project by identifying and defining critical factors such as... - Project purpose, goals and impact
- Scope, objectives and deliverables
- Constraints and assumptions
- Known risks and risk mitigation strategies
- Project organization, roles and responsibilities
- Project management approach and work plan
- Financial summary of expected costs & benefits
- Acceptance of the charter by key stakeholders
To accelerate development of the project charter, we developed a project charter template that also serves as the primary project plan document. This template defines the document structure and includes instructions for developing each section.

Project Schedule
The project schedule is the another critical document, along with the project charter, necessary to effectively manage a project. The project schedule describes the work breakdown structure (WBS) and timeline for the project. The project's WBS represents 100% of the work effort necessary to complete the deliverables within the scope of the project. The WBS is typically displayed in a hierarchy showing high-level stages/phases down to low-level tasks. All planned and actual work is entered at the lowest level task and rolled up to the high levels.
The project schedule serves as the primary tool for managing the project work effort by identifying and defining important project components such as...
- Project stages/phases
- Milestones
- Deadlines
- Tasks
- Deliverables
- Work effort (estimated & actual)
- Durations (estimated & actual)
- Resources and associated costs
- Project & resource calendars
- Dependencies
- Critical path
To accelerate development of the project schedule, we developed a project schedule template that defines the major stages/phases, milestones, tasks, deliverables and resources for an infrastructure deployment project, which can be easily adapted to other types of projects.
